What Is An Ambigram?
What is an ambigram? According to wikipedia: “An ambigram is a typographical design or artform that may be read as one or more words not only in its form as presented, but also from another viewpoint, direction, or orientation. The words readable in the other viewpoint, direction or orientation may be the same or different from the original words.”
Here are the types of ambigrams in my arsenal of tricks:
Rotational: A run-of-the-mill rotational symmetry ambigram where a word or phrase is readable when rotated.
Symbiotogram: An ambigram that reads two or more different words/phrases depending on the orientation.
Perception: A design that reads different words/phrases depending on how you interpret the design. No physical reorientation necessary. This category also includes figure/ground designs.
Mirror: An ambigram that reads the same when viewed in a mirror, that is symmetrical left-right right-left.
Chain: A design where a word/phrase is linked to itself in a repeating chain. This may or may not contain elements of a symmetrical ambigram, single or dual.
Spinonym: A design made of a single character rotated to read as different letters/numbers.
3-D: This one’s hard to describe, but basically any of the above ambigrams but created in three dimensions as a sculpture of some kind.
